WHAT IS PHENOMENOLOGY?
A broad subject in architecture, Phenomenology has inspired not only many buildings, but also many ideas surrounding human emotion. Architects that are recognised for their phenomenological work include Steven Holl, Peter Zumthor and Daniel Libeskind. By looking at some of their own theories and buildings, particularly the materials used, I hope to gain a greater understanding of what phenomenology means, how materials contribute to its definition, and to discover to what extent materials are impacting on human emotion, our perception of atmosphere and our experiences.
'It can be understood as an aspect of philosophy researching into the experience of built space, and as shorthand for architectural phenomenology, a historical architectural movement.' (Anon, 2016)
Phenomenology, ‘demonstrated in architecture, is the manipulation of certain qualities such as light, shadow and material, to create a memorable encounter through an impact on the human senses.’ (Arch630, 2011)
